Sir Walter Scotts - Friar Ramon Pane
A gros ( coarse ) milled Indian cheroot tobacco, fermented with a concentrate of leaves boiled with Maldon sea salt and lightly cased with a tincture made from Tonka beans and Vanilla pods.
Named after the poor anchorite of the Order of St. Jerome, who accompanied Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the New World in 1493 and on his return in 1498, is credited with introducing to Europe the habit of snuffing ground tobacco, which he had observed among the Taino and Carib people of the Lesser Antilles.
